HERRIMAN — Although Utah has a reputation for a monolithic culture with scattered ethnic and cultural communities, Salt Lake County belies a rich and thriving history of cultural communities that represent histories and identities across the globe. The vibrancy and diversity are apparent in Salt Lake neighborhoods stretching from Sugar House all the way to our very own Herriman city.

The Urban Indian Center of Salt Lake (UISCL)

UISCL opened its doors in 1974. Since then, it has promoted welfare, social, and educational services for indigenous communities within the Salt Lake boundary. According to their website, the UISCL “…devote[s] resources to support and develop accessible, culturally competent healthcare programs and services for the whole family.” More information about their services can be found on their website.

Utah Black Chamber

Although the focus of this organization is to support equitable opportunities for Black Utahns, it also hosts community events, such as lounge screenings, available to its members. They aim to support Black entrepreneurs in the state and promote inclusion of minority-owned businesses. People can sign up to become members, even if they are not business owners or don’t identify as Black. Members can access job and volunteer opportunities, newsletters, and events.

Equality Utah

A leading civil rights organization for the LGBTQ+ community, Equality Utah, aims for a fair and just Utah for everyone. It is the state’s largest LGBTQ+ civil rights organization that primarily advocates through legislative means. They also host community events, such as allies galas, to fundraise for their organization. Individuals can sign up to volunteer at their public events or host a letter-writing session to lobby for pro-LGBTQ+ legislation.

Gujarati Cultural Association of Utah (GCAU)

The GCAU is dedicated to creating a thriving Gujarati community in Salt Lake. The organization celebrates the history and culture of Gujarat, a state on the western coast of India. They host cultural events such as Garba (a traditional Gujarati dance), poojas (worship rituals), and Diwali festival parties. People interested in attending GCAU events can sign up to become a member through their website.

There are countless other multicultural communities in Utah. More information about programs or events is accessible through the Utah government website for multicultural affairs. Cultural organizations foster solidarity and diversity within Utah. They enable the exchange of ideas between people with distinct worldviews while ensuring a Utah with space for everyone.
